Jesus claimed to be God
GOD HAS A SON
By Craig C. White
Some people say that Jesus never claimed that he was God. They are so wrong. Jesus claimed to be God and it got him into a lot of trouble.
Mat 26:63-65 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. 64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. 65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
The high priest understood that Jesus claimed to be God. He was ready to stone Jesus for his claim. I understand that Jesus was claiming to be God. The disciple Peter understood that Jesus was God. Only by God’s power can we believe that Jesus is God.
Mat 16:15-17 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
We believe that Jesus is God through faith.
Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Joh 8:56-58 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. 57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
Jesus claims to have lived before Abraham. That is because he was alive before all creation. Jesus is not only a prophet. Jesus is God.
John 10:30 “I and the Father are one.”
Jesus the Son is one with God the Father. He said it!
Joh 18:4-6 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? 5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. 6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
Jesus had the power of God. Jesus healed the sick, made the blind to see, and did many miracles. John the Baptist asked if Jesus was the messiah. Jesus said that his miracles were evidence that he was. These miracles were prophesied (Job 29:15; Psa 146:8; Isa 29:18-19, Isa 32:3-4, Isa 35:5-6; Isa 42:6-7, Isa 42:16, Isa 61:1-3; Jer 31:8 etc.)
Luk 7:19-23 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? 20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? 21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. 22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. 23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
John 14:7-10 [7] If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” [8] Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” [9] Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father’? [10] Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.
You have to try awfully hard to believe that Jesus isn’t claiming to be God.
John 14:11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.
Do you still falter? Do you still say that Jesus didn’t claim to be God?
John 10:37-38 [37] Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. [38] But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”
If you cannot believe Jesus’ claims to be God then believe his miracles. Evidently people have stiff necks, and deceitful hearts that keep them apart from God.
Mat 27:41-43 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
Even though they didn’t honor Jesus as God, the religious leaders understood his claim that he was God and the son of God.
John 10:31-33 [31] Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, [32] but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?” [33] “We are not stoning you for any of these,” replied the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”
Jesus claimed that he was with God before creation. That means that he claimed to be God!
John 17:5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
Jesus claimed to be the Christ (the anointed one), the son of God, the I am, that he sits on the right hand of God in heaven, and that he will come back to earth as God. Show me somebody else who claimed to be God as much as Jesus did! Who do you believe?
Mark 14:61b-62 [61b] Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” [62] “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Jesus claims to be the Christ (the Messiah, the anointed). He is coming back with vengeance for the enemies of Israel!
Luke 22:66-70 [66] At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. [67] “If you are the Christ, ” they said, “tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, [68] and if I asked you, you would not answer. [69] But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.” [70] They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?” He replied, “You are right in saying I am.”
Do you believe Jesus when he says that he is the Messiah? Do you believe me? Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus is God.
Daniel 7:13-14 [13] “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. [14] He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
Jesus is coming again. This time he will rule over the entire earth with power. Beware. Jesus said,
Joh 5:42-43 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. 43 I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
Who will you believe? It doesn’t seem to matter what the evidence is. What seems to matter is what is in a man’s heart. Will you reject God because he is God? Don’t condemn yourself. Jesus is God!
It’s awesome to know that Jesus is God. One of the problems many Jews have with the gospel is that they think all Christians believe in 3 separate beings in the Godhead. We know that one of the 1st basic fundamental tenets of serving Jehovah was the understanding that there was only one God – Hear o Israel the Lord your God is One.
I’ve tried to explain it like this: I am a father, a son, and a husband, but I am only one human being. There is only One Divine Being in all existence – He manifest Himself as Father, Son, Holy Spirit…. but He’s only One Divine Being. God can become whatever He wants to become and not cease to be what He is!

Hi Jim: Great reply. I wrote my commentary “Jesus claimed to be God” in response to a Muslim who argued that Jesus never claimed to be God and also that God has no son. These are tenants of Islam. That couldn’t be any more wrong.
