God’s Great Expectations
The Curious Thing About Life
By Craig C. White
The curious thing about life is that after you find yourself in it, you discover that there are already a lot of other people there. In life it is not so important where you live or what you do for a living. You will not take your house or your money with you when you die. The important thing in life is that you have loving relationships with the people you meet; I think you will agree.
Ecc 5:15 As he came forth of his mother’s womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.
In life the first person you meet is God. Before you were born, while you were yet in the womb; somebody was there with you. God was there. God gave you life and a spirit. He made you, member by member. He fashioned your bones and muscles, and covered them with flesh. What does God think? God has very many kind thoughts toward you; and has great expectations that he would know you.
Psa 139:13-18 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. 15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. 17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
What is Life about? Here is the answer. That when you meet God, you would know him. This same God is very righteous and hates wickedness. He will surely judge those that reject his meeting.
Psa 139:19-24 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men. 20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain. 21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? 22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies. 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
The God you met is a person but he is not a man (Num 23:19). He does much greater things than any man can do (Eccles 8:17). He is separate from mankind. He is holy.
Ecc 11:5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.
The same God that made you also made the world and everything in it, all by himself. He knows the answer to the question, What is Life about?
Isa 44:24 Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;
When you walk outside you notice the world. You see grass and trees and sky. You see stars at night and think “Wow that is big and very beautiful!” You ask yourself, What is Life about? Every person sees the things that God has made. Because we see creation we know that there is a creator. God is shouting, “I made this; know me!” What is Life about? That when you see the things that God created, you would seek him. Because we all can see the things that God has made, we are all accountable to know and honor him. God says that nobody has an excuse!
Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
God is the first person you meet in life. At first he is very quiet; at times though he can get very loud. During your life he calls for you, and knocks at the door of your heart wanting you to let him in. He is very persistent, but the choice to answer the door is yours. What is Life about? That when God knocks at the door of your heart, you would let him enter.
Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Just as you were born, God promises that if you answer him he will give you new life; everlasting life. You will be born again.
Joh 3:3-8 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Because we have sinned we have lost something of our life. God promises to restore our life to be everlasting if we will believe that he is there and call upon him (Heb 11:6). What is Life about? That when you hear the word of God, you would believe in him.
Joh 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
What is Life about? Here is the answer. That when you meet God, you would know him.
