The Mosul countdown
Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown
By Craig C. White
The battle to retake Mosul in northern Iraq began on October 17, 2016. For some reason news organizations all over the world are keeping track of the number of days that the battle continues. I find that to be curious. Today the battle for Mosul is in its 34th day. Believe it or not Mosul is mentioned in the Bible. Mosul is the ancient Assyrian capital city of Nineveh. When I hear the Mosul countdown I am reminded of the Prophet Jonah’s message to Nineveh; “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown” (Jonah 3:4). I’ll bet that many people in Nineveh were keeping track of their countdown to destruction. The people in Nineveh listened to Jonah’s message and the city was spared. But a couple of hundred years latter the Prophet Nahum predicted that Nineveh would finally be destroyed.
The Prophet Nahum predicted that a flood of water would destroy the Assyrian capital city of Nineveh. Nineveh was flooded in 612 BC just as Nahum predicted. Nahum said that God would flood “the place” where Nineveh was built. Today Mosul is built in the same place. Nahum said that the Assyrian Empire would not rise a second time. Today ISIS is trying to establish a new Assyrian Empire. According to Nahum, that will not happen. Nahum doesn’t specifically say that Mosul will be destroyed by a flood during the end time but God put an end to the Assyrian Empire long ago with a flood. Since the Assyrian Empire is raising its head once again it seems fitting that God would send another flood to knock it down. Add to Nahum’s prophecy the fact that today the Mosul dam is in danger of bursting. Conditions in Mosul today match Nahum’s prophecy so it bears watching.
Since we are talking about the ancient city of Nineveh and the Prophet Jonah, I can’t help but remember Jesus Christ’s promise to give one sign to Israel that would prove that he was truly their Messiah. Jesus would give them the sign of Jonah.
Matthew 12:38-41 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. 39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: 40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
Jesus rose from the grave on the third day. The power of a resurrected life certainly is proof that Jesus is God. But there may be more to the sign of Jonah. Notice in verse 41 that the men of Nineveh repented at the preaching of Jonah. They did not repent at the miracle of surviving in a large fish for three days. I suspect that the flooding of Mosul may be the one end time sign to Israel that Jesus is truly their Messiah. Remembering Jonah’s message may be Israel’s last chance to repent before their time of tribulation begins.
I suspect that ISIS in Mosul will be wiped out by a flood of water. Then just like the destruction of Nineveh in 612 BC, three nations will fight against Mosul. Iraq, Iran, and the Kurds are all fighting on the outskirts of Mosul today. These are the same three nations that plundered Nineveh after the flood in 612 BC. If we follow the Mosul countdown then the flooding of Mosul could happen this week on Friday the 25th of November, 2016.
