The battle for Mosul vs the flood zone

The battle for Mosul vs the flood zone

By Craig C. White

The following verse was written about the place where the city of Mosul sits today. Mosul is situated along the Tigris River in northern Iraq. Mosul is the hometown and headquarters of ISIS. Mosul is Iraq’s second largest city with a prewar population of two and one half million. After two years of ISIS control one and one half million people remain in the city.

Nahum 1:8 But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.

The Prophet Nahum predicted the flooding and destruction of the ancient city of Nineveh. Nineveh was the capital city of the Assyrian Empire. Nineveh had great high walls making an attack very difficult. In 612 BC God sent torrential rain to swell the Tigris River and breach the walls of Nineveh. After the flood Nineveh’s enemies assaulted the city putting an end to the Assyrian Empire. The ruins of Nineveh still lay desolate within the city limits of Mosul.

The flood that Nahum describes seems to be far worse than the flood that broke down the walls of Nineveh. Today the Mosul dam lays thirty five miles upstream of Mosul. The Mosul dam has been labeled as the most dangerous dam in the world. It is in danger of failing. Nahum says that the gates of the Tigris River will be opened. Today the gates of the Mosul dam have come off of their hinges.

Nahum also says that the Assyrian Empire will not rise up a second time (Nahum 1:9). ISIS in Mosul is trying to create a new Assyrian Empire. So I suspect that ISIS in Mosul will be destroyed in a tremendous flood.

The same three nations that overthrew Nineveh are fighting against Mosul today. The Iraqi Army is already fighting within the eastern city limits of Mosul. The Kurds are fighting to the north, and Iranian backed Shiite militias are fighting to the far west of Mosul.

The battle for Mosul has been going on for about two months. The fighting has gotten much harder and slower now that the Iraqi Army has entered into the more densely populated city limits on the eastern side of Mosul.

ISIS still controls most of Mosul. The center of ISIS territory lies in the worst flood zone. If the Mosul dam were to break then parts of Mosul could be covered by 75 feet of water. The Prophet Nahum says that the inhabitants of Nineveh will be gathered close together and drunken when they are destroyed.

Nahum 1:10 For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

Perhaps the armies that have gathered against Mosul will drive ISIS towards the center of the city where they are certain to be swept away in the flood.

  1. Craig,

They have been fighting in rain for the last week. Reports say that ISIS is trying to get the upper hand because of weather. Maybe God is going to fight the battle His way. Have enjoyed listening to your Radio Show.

    1. Thank you David. Nahum 1:3 The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
