Iraqis prepare week long celebration

The end of ISIS is in sight

ISIS now controls only a small portion of the Old City neighborhood in western Mosul. ISIS’ last bastion is a complex of buildings located directly on the western bank of the Tigris River. Iraqi military forces expect to overtake ISIS in a matter of a few days. The Iraqi government has declared a one week national celebration. ISIS hasn’t been completely removed from Mosul yet. Still the Iraqi people are anticipating victory over ISIS by the end of the week. Some Iraqi’s have already begun celebrating. In fact; Even though much of Mosul lies in ruins, the sale of alcohol has reached record highs.

The high alcohol sales remind me of this verse in the Old Testament book of Nahum. Nahum predicted the flooding of the ancient Assyrian capital city of Nineveh. Today Nineveh is called Mosul. Nahum may also predict the flooding of ISIS in Mosul. Nahum says that ISIS will be gathered closely together and that they will also be drunk with wine when they are completely destroyed. Today ISIS has been pushed closely together into the Old City neighborhood of western Mosul. The wine is beginning to flow in Mosul. ISIS has been cornered on the western bank of the Tigris River directly across from the Nineveh ruins.

Nahum 1:10 For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

Let’s remember that Mosul is the hometown of ISIS. ISIS was hatched out of Al-Qaeda of northern Iraq. Many Mosul residents are sympathetic to the Sunni Muslim ideals of Al-Qaeda. Many ISIS fighters have their permanent homes in Mosul. Even though it looks like the last ISIS fortification is about to fall; there are still many ISIS fighters as well as ISIS supporters peppered throughout Mosul. Mosul residents are reporting that many ISIS members are still living in the liberated neighborhoods of Mosul. So there is still some house cleaning needed in order to completely eradicate ISIS from Mosul. Nahum says that God will destroy the place where Nineveh was with an overrunning flood of water.

Nahum 1:8 But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.

Reports have been circulating that ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi has been killed by a Russian airstrike. But the US and Iraqi governments say that they have no confirmation. According to U.S. and Iraqi military sources, Baghdadi has left the fighting in Mosul to local commanders and is believed to be hiding on the Iraq-Syrian border. This week ISIS burned to death one of their own clerics for suggesting that Baghdadi was dead. ISIS distributed leaflets saying that an important message about their leader Al-Baghdadi was coming soon. This is interesting in light of the following verse. Nahum may be describing the ISIS leader as he addresses his troops before sending them to their death as they make their final stand in Mosul. This is something that I am on the lookout for. A formal address by Al-Baghdadi to his ISIS fighters would put Nahum’s prophecy on high alert.

Nahum 2:5 He shall recount his worthies: they shall stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall thereof, and the defence shall be prepared.

The Iraqi Army has made painstaking but steady progress against ISIS in western Mosul. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been trapped inside of the Old City neighborhood. ISIS has used the residents of Mosul as human shields and has killed anybody trying to escape. There are many slain in western Mosul; both civilians as well as ISIS fighters. The Iraqi Army wants to allow the residents to return to their homes but they say that many dead bodies must be removed beforehand. Nahum says that there will be many dead bodies in Mosul.

Nahum 3:3 The horseman lifteth up both the bright sword and the glittering spear: and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and there is none end of their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses:

Bible prophecy often has more than one fulfillment. Nahum’s predictions happened in 612 BC when the Babylonians besieged the city of Nineveh and the Tigris River overflowed its banks dissolving the city walls. But Nahum’s predictions could also be applied to ISIS in Mosul today. Tragically the vast majority of Christians are completely unaware of the book of Nahum and its application to ISIS in Mosul.
