Bible verses about Eagles Wings

Wait, don’t forget your wings!

Isaiah 40:31

By Craig C. White

Eagle’s wings do not always represent the United States in the Bible! Here are some familiar Bible verses that are typically not fully understood.

Isa 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

This Bible verse contains two statements that are seldom taught. First, what does “waiting” on the Lord mean? Well it may mean something to you personally, but it has a very powerful and specific application in scripture.

During the Great Tribulation Jerusalem will be overrun by its enemies. The residents of Judea are instructed to flee to the wilderness but the only way for the residents of Jerusalem to survive is not to run away but to “wait” in Mount Zion in Jerusalem. They are “waiting” for the Messiah to save them from their enemies.

Isa 25:9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Also see Isa 30:18.

The second statement in Isaiah 40:31 is they shall mount up with wings as eagles”. Again, this verse may hold some personal meaning, but the term “eagles wings” is used in scripture to indicate God’s supernatural help given to the Israelites in time of flight. It was applied to Israel’s exodus out of Egypt.

Exodus 19:4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.

God carried the Jewish people out of Egypt like an Eagle carries her young. In the next Bible verse Moses explains how an eagle caries her young.

Deu 32:11 As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings:

In the future God will bear the Israelis on “eagle’s wings” two more times. First, the inhabitants of Judea will flee to the mountains when they see the Antichrist sitting in the holy place (2Th 2:4). God will help the Jews to flee to Jordan. For more Bible verses about Judea’s flight also see Mark 13:14

Rev 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

Finally God will give “eagles wings” to the residue of the inhabitants of Jerusalem who didn’t run but instead “waited” in Mount Zion at Christ’s return at the end of the “Great Tribulation” (Isa 40:31, Zec 14:3-5).

Isa 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

  1. Craig,
Agreed, this is a message for the remnant of Israel who trust in the Lord for salvation in Christ. However, as a gentile who has trusted Christ for salvation shouldn’t I also conclude, that if I wait upon the Lord He will renew my strength also? His promises are yes and amen for those that trust Him (2 Cor 1:20). “They” must include all who believe, but have a special meaning for those who wait in the latter days in Israel. I think prophecy has a two fold purpose. To remind a particular people what it means to be the people of God in a particular time (Dr. Stewart Briscoe). We all are waiting for the “Day of The Lord.” For the righteous it will be a day of redemption, and for the wicked, a day of destruction.

    1. Hi David. I hear you and agree. I only fear that the Christian Church has completely overlooked the incredibly important warning to the Jews that are living in Jerusalem when the Antichrist attacks. We have left it up to them to figure out how to survive without direction. It seems to me that Christians ought to look out for Israelis who we claim to love.

  2. Craig,

Yes and amen! Last Sunday, in Sunday School one of our retired pastors was teaching in Matthew. He asked the question “What do you think the sign of Jonah is?” After several people gave the classic answers of the resurrection, 3 days in darkness, and so on, I couldn’t wait to raise my hand and lay out a little of your commentary on the subject. Yes, I did site my source hightime- toawake.com. No one in a room of about forty had heard one thing about Mosul, Jonah’s shrine, or Nahum’s memorial being damaged, or threatened by ISIS. I really believe that progressive Bible teachers have inflicted their damage on the church by convincing people that prophecy has ceased, is not cyclical, and has no contemporary value. They do believe in the return of Jesus, but speak of the event as some far off promise, and almost challenges anyone who would claim to dare have any understanding of the signs that will precede His coming. The church is asleep, and as you say “We ought to look out for Israel.” I hope not, but perhaps the pastor who was teaching and the group that is joining him next spring on a teaching expedition to Israel will be their to witness Jeremiah 49 first hand.

    1. I just thought of something. The book of Nahum starts in the Golan Heights and ends in Mosul. That is the same path that Jonah took.

  3. I thought the earthquake a few days in Iran/Iraq may have been close enough to rattle the fragile gypsum below the Mosul dam. It definitely will not withstand the shaking that will occur when God stops the first invasion of Israel by the AC.

    1. Good call David.

Ezekiel 38:19-20 For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel; 20 So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men thatare upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.

Sounds like Jesus Christ will make a personal appearance.
